Keeping up with the Digital Revolution in the ESL Classroom: 4 Skills meet 21st Century Skills

Saturday, November 10, 2007

9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

*Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m.

Workshop Overview

An explosion of new technologies has opened up opportunities for all levels of ESL teachers to develop their students’ abilities in the four skills.  At the same time, new National Educational Technology Standards for Students have identified “what students should know and be able to do to learn effectively and live productively in an increasingly digital world.” The goal of this session is to give teachers hands-on experience with several technical innovations and to model instruction to meet the standards in the effective uses of new technologies.  Participants will learn instruction strategies that can be incorporated into K-12 ESL classrooms of all levels. This workshop will cover the following skills and technologies:

· Reading  - WebQuests, Blogs

· Writing – Instant Messaging, Blogs, My Space/Facebook

· Listening – Online TV/Radio Broadcasts, YouTube, Podcasts, Skype Video Chat, Text-to-Speech

· Speaking – Creating Podcasts, Digital Video, Skype Video Chat

Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring a laptop computer and headphones to use during the workshop. Free wireless access will be available.
